Councillor Vacancy

Are you free to volunteer to help out in our community?  Do you want to see Trafalgar as a safe, inclusive place for everyone to live?

Although we have been successful in recruiting new councillors this year, HTNC has one vacancy  remaining which we can fill using a process called “co-option.”  We would therefore encourage any residents who would like to help us shape the future of our neighbourhood and build a happy, healthy and harmonious community to step forward.

All Councillors are volunteers and must be resident in the Trafalgar neighbourhood area and registered to vote.  The only real pre-requisites are enthusiasm, a willingness to build strong working relationships with other Councillors and colleagues and a drive to put something back into your community.

What does being a Neighbourhood Councillor involve?

Councillors attend monthly meetings of the Neighbourhood Council where we review planning applications, receive updates from Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council representatives and consider matters of concern to Trafalgar residents.  Councillors should also encourage communication by making themselves known to residents, answering residents’ questions or referring questions on to the Neighbourhood Council.  This amounts to a commitment of a few hours each month.

If you have the flexibility to offer more time, some of our Councillors also specialise in specific areas or issues of interest to them, or represent the Neighbourhood Council in various outside committees and organisations.  At present these include Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Forum, the Horsham Town Community Partnership and the Neighbourhood Wardens Steering Group – but there is always more we can do if we have the people to do it.  We are particularly interested in having a member with an interest in the youth of Trafalgar and/or the needs of older residents.

How do I find out more?

The first step is to attend one or more of our monthly meetings and speak to the Chairman and other Councillors to get your questions answered.  These meetings are open to the public (currently taking place online via Zoom) and usually take place on the first Monday of each month – Bank Holidays permitting!

If you would like to enquire about becoming a Neighbourhood Councillor or simply attending one of our meetings, email our Clerk, Rhoda Hatton clerk@horshamtrafalgarnc.com
